HOME > QUIPSOGRAPHY > WHITEWASH (2014) > PAGE 2 Top marks as well to Church's co-star, 6-time Gémeaux Award-winning Montréal actor and comedian Marc Labrèche. Fans of Canadian film probably recognize Labrèche from his Genie-nominated lead performance in acclaimed director Denys Arcand's movie, The Age of Ignorance (2007) - aka Days of Darkness, the third in what is considered Arcand's comedic French-language trilogy that included The Decline of the American Empire (1986) and the Oscar-winning The Barbarian Invasions (2003). Labrèche is phenomenal in Whitewash. Completely natural and masterfully off-the-cuff in his scenes, he's a sheer treasure to watch on the big screen here. You're never sure if you're supposed to like or loathe Blackburn's charismatic, opportunistic manner. Brilliant. Also hugely notable is long-time cinematographer André Turpin's camerawork throughout this 90 minute Canadian-made gem. His big screen credits include winning Genie Awards for Best Cinematography for his work in director Denis Villeneuve's Genie and Jutra Awards sweeping Maelström (2000), and Oscar-nominated Incendies (2010). Turpin plays with the bleak surroundings in Whitewash, fleshing them out as characters in their own right while beautifully echoing and enhancing the story's enjoyably persistent weirdness. In one extremely memorable snow squall night scene, Landry's weary snow plow carries him North into an unlit narrow stretch of Québec's Route 141. As though it's plunging down a rabbit hole. That's what it looks like. Simply surreal. Love it. Whitewash is an incredibly enjoyable, wonderfully captivating macabre effort. Well worth checking out and definitely deserving of acclaim, this low key Canadian comedy's crisply unburdened screenplay knowingly clips along while serving up exceptional performances from Thomas Haden Church and Marc Labrèche. embracing and kissing, sexual innuendo, and restrained portrayals
of non-graphic violence, and is rated G by la Régie du
