HOME > QUIPSOGRAPHY > MACHETE KILLS (2013) > PAGE 2 In another action-packed scene, while in the midst of facing off against trigger-happy lunatic arms manufacturer Luther Voz (Mel Gibson), Machete suddenly stops and walks away as though he's bored and unscripted. Within the over-all context of this farce, the carefully terrible acting and purposely amateurish post-production seen here are absolute side-splitting fun. While the somewhat manic and flippant presence of Voz tends to retrace familiar territory from Gibson's previous big screen comedic work, Gibson's oddball input is definitely one of many memorably funny highlights in Machete Kills. More notable is Sofía Vergara's often wildly off-the-chain performance as ridiculously bodacious Mexican brothel maven Madame Desdemona, hilariously roaring through her scenes with crazy-eyed fury and an ammo-blastin' metal brassiere. Sure, it's reminiscent of the fembots in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997), but Vergara takes it to an entirely new level of laugh-out-loud innuendo and insanity. An overwhelming favourite aspect of this picture is the bizarrely elusive gun-for-hire, El Cameleón, played by Walton Goggins, and then by Cuba Gooding Jr., followed by Lady Gaga, and then Antonio Banderas. Obvious celeb cameo novelty aside, it's an absolute treat watching each actor bring a decidedly different twist to this ever-changing role while remaining relevant to the movie's frenetic pace. Awesome. Machete Kills isn't for everyone, and probably won't last long in first-run theatres. It's a crude, goofy, contrived and cheap-looking B-movie featuring a talented cast purposely serving up terrible acting for a mature audience to split a gut at. If that's your kind of guilty pleasure, definitely check it out. I had a blast screening this flick, and look forward to seeing what happens with the proposed second sequel, Machete Kills Again...
