HOME > QUIPSOGRAPHY > DON JON (2013) > PAGE 2 Joseph Gordon-Levitt is also phenomenal in front of the camera, effortlessly giving a paying audience this hilariously strutting, emotionally stunted ego to watch with interest as Jon slowly evolves from being a Young Turk pickup artist who believes watching online porn is better than having real sex. Jon habitually rolls out of bed from each nightly, satisfied conquest to handily, uh, 'lose himself' surfing laptop flesh for fantasy. Additionally, with Jon pretty much being a Sunday Christian, his moments in confessional trying to play a weird kind of points system based on his weekly sins are priceless. Top marks as well to Scarlett Johansson for her wonderfully underplayed performance as Barbara Sugarman, the smoking hot blonde bamboccioni who seduces Jon, despite her own fairly unrealistic fantasies about men and relationships needing to reflect those of the Hollywood romances she drags him to. Their scenes together are devilishly amazing. Also amazing is Julianne Moore, presenting an incredible mixture of mellowness, vulnerability, and maturity in Jon's life. Frankly, this entire cast brings their individual A-game to the screen here, with impressive results. Tony Danza and Brie Larson are laugh-out-loud hilarious as Jon's parents. Don Jon isn't a movie for everyone. However, if you enjoy sharp deadpan satire and can appreciate mature subject matter that's handled maturely, this one's definitely well worth checking out for its cleverly crafted characters and story arc, as well as for its electrifying cast of talent. Good stuff. Reviewed 09/13, © Stephen Bourne. Don Jon is rated 18A by the Ontario
